THE LOWLY FRAG AND ITS MISSION

Twelve pound frag from 13" Union mortar - many frags for sale at our store

Call them "frags," or fragments, or shrapnel. They're the end result of an explosion of an artillery shell or mortar, or some other explosive device, and they're meant to kill. During the siege of Vicksburg, hundreds of thousands of frags rained own upon the city. Civilians as well as soldiers were killed or maimed by the Union bombardment. War on civilians, a practice common during the invasion by Grant, Sherman, and other Union commanders during the War for Southern Independence, left a legacy of hatred that, though subdued today, remains ever present in the minds of many who study that terrible period.
