General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing of WWI fame. Likeness of Pershing professionally mounted in a gorgeous period oval bubble-glass frame

A WWI soldier identified as one Ira Garrison. Likeness mounted in a military style gold frame with eagle and "U. S. A." at top, American flags sides and bottoms.

WWI sailor whose hat identifies him as having served aboard the USS Madawaska, a German vessel seized by the US government at the start of WWI and converted to a troop transport ship. Likeness mounted in a military style gold frame with eagle and "U. S. A." at top, American flags sides and wreath at bottom.

These oval frames are large - appx. 24" tall by 18" wide - and can be seen on the second floor. They are priced at only $175 each plus shipping if required.

VINTAGE SOAPBOX DERBY RACE CAR

Whoever built the "Claustrophobia" (it was found in an old house here in Vicksburg) picked the right name for it, and did one heck of a job constructing it. Once it's given a push, it won't stop. It's that fast - "greased lightning," I think, is the appropriate term. The wheel bearings have grease fittings; the steel frame is practically indestructible. The builder placed the steering and brake "sticks" on either side of the seat, which is tilted toward the rear so that the driver is positioned semi-prone. A dark plexiglas windshield allows the driver to steer this sleek machine. He is fitted into a tight, dark, claustrophobic atmosphere, thus the machine's name. This vintage race car can be seen on the second floor. Asking price: $1,500.

CIVIL WAR GRAPE & CANNISTER 6 & 12 POUNDER

Just dug from a hillside beside the Yazoo River, where Confederate forces were holding Porter's flotilla of ironclads at bay. These grape and canister shot range from approximately 1 1/4" to approximately 2 1/8" diameter and were probably fired from 6 and 12 pounder smoothbores.

While they last they can be bought for $12.00 (large) and $6.00 (small) (plus shipping if required). Come by the store, or to order by mail call me at 601-618-7478, or email 717antiques@gmail.com.

ANTIQUE JAPANESE 12" FISHING FLOAT

It's amazing what turns up in the homes of Vicksburg, Mississippi. I purchased this 12" diameter Japanese float from a local resident who was given the antique collectible while on a trip abroad. It's in superb condition, complete with the original mesh wrapping. I assume that the Japanese fishermen used these floats to suspend their nets. See it on the second floor.

CAST IRON SKILLETS & POTS

I'm no great chef, but when my wife refuses (which is often) and I have no alternative but to rustle up my own grub, my first choice for a cooking implement is a cast iron skillet. Properly seasoned, these heavy implements will give their owners years of superb service. Their slick, non-stick surface will fry a steak to perfection or sauté' onions or perform any of a number of other culinary functions better (in my opinion) than any other material known to man or woman.

We have a number of these fine utensils on hand, second floor, that have been seasoned and are ready for use in your kitchen. Prices are very reasonable. Come by and take a look!

BOOKS - WAR FOR SOUTHERN INDEPENDENCE

Sometimes called (inaccurately) the "Civil War," the conflict  between the northern and southern states of the USA had an enormous effect on the future of our country. Volume after volume have been written on the subject. We have recently purchased a moderate collection of such books; they are now available on both floors of the antique shop. We have first editions as well as everyday editions at very reasonable prices.

ANCIENT DUCK DECOYS

Several of these old decoys were brought to the store a while back, though only a couple of them are suitable to add to a collection. They are constructed of a canvas-like material and filled with chips of cork (I presume). The bills are wood, and wood strips are laced to the undersides. Around the neck is a lead weight attached by a length of cord. If you have an interest in old decoys, these can be had at very reasonable prices.
