Why, you ask? Call me a doomsday nut, paranoid, or a prepper, but I'm becoming convinced that the situations described in Orwell's "1984" are becoming more fact than fiction. If you've been following the news, you are aware of current events and I don't need to explain. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you'd best get yourself educated before the SHTF.
Now, to my recommendation that you buy books:
It seems that most of the younger (and even many of the older) crowd are buying Nooks and Kindles and other types of online readers through which you can download most any book ever written. That's fine. But how do you know that what you're downloading is true to its original form? Have words been altered? Have paragraphs been omitted? It is a FACT that some written material is being altered by the "politically correct" among us so that it conforms to their idea of acceptable (case in point - Mark Twain's novels to remove the "N" word), or even to adapt it to their ideology. You really won't know unless you have access to an original copy of the material. With the present administration committed to change, I would not put it past these anti-Americans to use the online bookstores to further their philosophies. They've demonstrated that they have no respect for the constitution or capitalism. They want this country turned into a socialist/communist society. What better way than to control what you read?
Here's another reason to buy books: Suppose there is a national disaster - an EMP event (whether caused by sunspot activity or Iran). Or a nuclear war. Or riots in the street instigated by Obozo and friends that result in loss of internet, phone service, power and water for days or weeks - or years! Or any of a number of unexpected and sudden catastrophes that leave you isolated. If you survived the first few weeks, could you then grow a garden in order to feed your family? Hunt or trap a wild animal for food? Make soap? Dig a shallow well, or purify sewage for drinking water? Locate medicinal herbs? Spot edible wild plants? Build a fire and cook a meal outdoors? Or any of a thousand other needs that require skills that you don't have, but might learn if you had the right books?
And another reason: If you are stuck for days on end with nothing but silence in the aftermath of a disaster, wouldn't you like a few good novels on hand to pass the time?
